This week’s chosen artist is Renato Pastor from Brazil. You can find his work on Tumblr, DevianArt and Facebook.
Here's a little about Renato:
1 . When did you become an X-Phile?
I think it was way back in '97 or '98, I think, which was the first time I caught a glimpse of the show late at night on TV. Right from the moment I saw it, I knew it was something special that I had to follow.
2. What is the first episode you watched?
It's hard to remember, because after all, it's been almost 20 years. It may possibly have been the one about the Nephilim, 'All Souls'. It was so creepy, and the atmosphere so eerie. Granted, it's got nothing to do with aliens, but The X-Files had in their 'monster of the week' episodes some of the best in the series, I think.
3. What are you looking forward to seeing in the revival?
Mostly, I want them to recapture the tone of the series, which I think it's the most important thing. I want to look at it and go 'Ah, this is The X-Files I know and love'. Having said that, you gotta have Skinner and the Lone Gunmen in there. Also, Monica Reyes, I like her (is it too much to ask for a Frank Black cameo also?)
4. What inspired you to draw X-Files?
I'm always inspired to draw characters I love. If they had an impact on me, I HAVE to at least try and draw them.
5. Who is your favorite character?
I'll have to go with Scully. She's badass without resorting to the common tropes. You don't see her solving problems by roundhouse-kicking or kung-fu-ing her way out of trouble. Her main weapon is her mind, and I like her skeptical approach to things, which is something you gotta have when your partner is Mulder. Also, Gillian Anderson is a damn fine actress.
6. List your top 5 episodes.
It's hard to pick just five, but in no particular order, they would be:
- Deep Throat
- Beyond the Sea
- The Erlenmeyer Flask
- Anasazi
- All Souls
7. Favorite X-Files quote.
I gotta go with "Trust no One". It's such a pivotal moment when it's said for the first time (by Deep Throat), that I still get the chills when I rewatch that scene.
8. How has The X-Files impacted your life?
I remember thinking, after seeing it for the first time 'Wow, this is like a movie', because the production values were so high. Up until that moment, I didn't think a TV series had that power to grab my attention and make me come back week after week, the way The X-Files did. It also got me and my friends talking and discussing about space and UFOs every morning at school (in a time where internet forums were not quite available to us) and sparked my interest in science and astronomy and all things 'spooky'.
Thanks, Renato! Come back next Wednesday for a new artist!
